Diving Adventures

Image Courtesy Cayman Islands Department of TourismIn the Caribbean, diving can be relaxing and tranquil or action-packed, adrenaline pumping and adventurous - the choice is yours. Just imagine being in a tropical location diving in crystal clear water, surrounded by brightly colored coral and fish. You enter the water and drift effortlessly over an abundant coral reef or plunge down a sheer wall to explore the vast array of marine life. Or, you’re off exploring the wreck of a 200 year old ship off the coast of a small island out in the middle of the ocean. There are endless opportunities (these are just some of the more popular adventures) but, whatever you choose to do, you’ll surely have something to write home about.

There are diving programs in the Caribbean to suit everyone’s desires and thousands of knowledgeable and enthusiastic instructors for every standard of diver. DRIFT DIVING — Experience the sheer thrill of floating effortlessly along a coral reef or sandy bottom alive with brightly Image courtesy Cayman Islands Department of Tourismcolored tropical fish and a variety of marine life. Relax and let the current guide you along the reef and feel the rush of flying underwater. This is what drift diving is all about. And, the best place to do it is in the Caribbean!

REEF DIVING — The Caribbean is home to the world’s third-largest barrier reef – a staggeringly beautiful display of coral in blue waters. Our islands are surrounded by crystal clear, calm water averaging 30 metres/100 feet of visibility or more and provide a large diversity of diving that rivals any other. Many of our islands have coral growing on volcanic and mountainous outcrops just offshore. As you glide along, you’ll find the reefs alive with dramatic coral and Image courtesy Curacao Tourist Boardsponge formations complimented with turtles, stingrays, brightly colored schools of tropical fish, eels, sharks and much, much more. Enjoy these spectacular displays of grace and beauty as only mother nature can provide.

WALL DIVING — For an experienced diver, almost nothing beats the challenge and excitement of plunging down a sheer wall to see life in the depths. Many of our islands are the pinnacles of vast underwater mountain ranges, offering fascinating adventures just off the coast. Enjoy the entire experience by slowly descending the wall or pinnacle. Many start shallow and are decorated with soft corals and basket sponges. As you venture further down, take in the sites of seawhips, gorgonia, soft corals and feather duster worms. Still heading downward? You may encounter an eagle ray, tarpon or blacktip shark. Wall diving is your opportunity to experience so much of what our underwater world has to offer in just one dive.

WRECK DIVING — The treacherous reefs that cover the Caribbean have lured many unwary captains to disaster. Fierce naval battles have claimed more ships over the centuries and pirates used to ply their cut-throat trade here, too. View the splendor of sunken ships, downed planes and lost treasures beneath the surface. The wrecks now seethe with underwater life – and beckon you to explore.

Hundreds of fantastic wrecks populate our island’s coasts. Ranging in size from 9 metres/30 feet to 91 metres/300 feet or more, you may land upon one that sank within the year or one that has made the ocean its home for several centuries. Either way, you won’t be disappointed.
